Zheng Lu: Interpreting Nonexistance

I was pleasantly surprised a few days ago when I stumbled across this exhibition at Beijing New Age Art Gallery. As I walked into the gallery, I felt as if I had stepped into another world; the lights were dim and there was moody, slow electronic music playing in the background. Zheng Lu’s perfectly lit stainless steel sculptures shone like bright stars in the abyss.

Interpreting Nonexistance is Zheng Lu’s first solo show. In addition to the gorgeous ambiance, the works are actually quite remarkable. The seven works are composed of more than 20,000 Chinese characters from texts and poems weld together.

I am glad to see that the young artist, born in 1978, has begun to is create from his heart: his love of calligraphy (which is a stark contrast from the uber-kitsch Mao Egg he was famous for).

In addition, I am pleased to say that although he is using Chinese characters to create contemporary art (a genre that is usually very formula), his works are fresh, elegant and strong.

Ambiance is KEY. Many galleries in 798 forget this and take the “Wham-Bam” Approach: one exhibition in, one exhibition out without changing any of the decor. Therefore if you are planning a visit to the area, this is a must see.
