Feelings are Facts: Ma Yansong

UCCA is host to an amazing site specific installation created by famed architect Ma Yansong and Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The main hall of the center has been transformed into a color wonderland: pushing the limits of art and architecture.

This installation obscures vision by constantly pumping out large amounts of artificially produced fog. The ceiling gradually lowers and the floor gradually inclines as you move through the maze of fluorescent fog.

The fluorescent lights are in a grid of red, green and blue. The spaces where the colored fog overlaps, the two hues blend, creating transitional spaces.

Truthfully, I have already been in this installation over 5 times. At the opening the fog was extremely thick. You had to trust your gut feelings over the facts because you could not see more than 3 feet in front of you. There were no walls, or floor, just colors.

I expect that more large scale exhibitions/installations are in the future for the UCCA. They have just announced their partnership with Minsheng Bank, the first partnership of its kind in the nation. This is a good sign for the future of Chinese contemporary art because other enterprises will take note and hopefully more will begin to sponsor art organizations and artists.
