Art Beijing, which takes place April 29th to May 2nd, is arguably the strongest contemporary art fair in the capitol. Although it is the strongest fair in Beijing it pales in comparison to SH Contemporary and the HK Art Fair which is the strongest of the three.

This year the fair features 20 projects by major international non-profit organizations, museums, foundations, cultural centers and embassies. The roster of galleries covers over 25 countries.

This year the fair was smaller, Photo Beijing was not held in its own building and the main hall had several themed additions. My favorite addition was Artists Cinema, a section focused on up and coming video artists from Asia.

In my opinion, this fair still needs a few years to really be a strong contender. There were very few visitors during the weekend due to poor PR planning.

My favorite works were by Li Xiaofeng. The dress featured above is made from Chinese porcelain. The porcelain vases are smashed and its pieces are sown together. Stunning craftsmanship in a time and a place where everything is mass produced.
