Reshaping History, also known as the First China Contemporary Documenta, is an extremely ambitious exhibition curated by Lv Peng. This exhibition fills three large exhibition spaces. The established artists fill the National Convention Center which is located right next to the Olympic Bird’s Nest. The younger generation fills the Today Art Museum. The last venue is Arario Beijing Art Space.

Last night I attended the opening at the National Convention Center. This is the largest of the exhibition halls. This portion includes works from 226 famous artists. The government sponsored opening + gala dinner was a who’s who of the Chinese contemporary art world.

The convention center was a spectacle for the eyes. The first hall was filled with new works from the greats: Yue Minjun, Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi, etc. Each preceding hall was categorized by age, fame and style.

Feng Zhengjie installation
One of my favorite artists Zheng Dali, famous for his AK-47 paintings and graffiti works, exhibited We an installation were he uses real human cadavors.

The exhibition’s massive size, scope and government sponsorship really usher in a new era for Chinese contemporary art. Although the event was a bit over the top, complete with own orchestra, it was a once in a lifetime experience to see all the great artists under one roof.
